'India offers the most skilled workforce'

May 5, 2008

What are the most important qualities a professional must have?

In the IT business today, to rise above the crowd, I believe that superior client management skills together with an ability to build trusting relationships are key qualities. A professional can always learn a new technical skill or the latest programming language, but a successful person couples that with strong "people" skills. Our business is increasing global - we do more and more business via video conference versus face-to-face. Building strong relationships with colleagues as well as clients is more important than ever. I also think that, to be successful at CGI, a professional must have a commitment to excellence.

What are the reasons for your success? What are your biggest accomplishments?

Many people have contributed to my success. I have been fortunate to have had great mentors throughout my career that have helped me develop strong team building skills - because without a strong team, it is very difficult to be successful in the IT business. I think my understanding of our clients' business has also been vital for me. I spent almost 30 years working with government sector clients, which allowed me to truly understand the management challenges they face every day. That understanding - the business understanding - helped me and my team create innovative solutions to deliver results. Also, as you can imagine in today's dynamic marketplace, being flexible and having a sense of humor always helps.

What would be your advice to people who are aspiring to join the BPO/IT sector?

Once a person has acquired the business and technical skills needed, I think the most important piece of advice I would offer is for a person to listen and learn everything they can about their client - whether it is an internal client or an external client. Understanding the client - their business challenges and pressures as well as the "politics" at work - will take a person a long way on the road to success.
