Sensex surges 126 points at close

The markets got fired up in late noon deals as hectic buying across-the-board saw the index breach the 4,900-levels to touch a high of 4,913. The Sensex finally signed-off the last day of trading week, with a huge gain of 2.64% (126 points) at 4,907. The Nifty also ended firm at 1,556 - up 39 points.

Reliance gained nearly 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 486. ITC, which traded on a sluggish note for better part of the trading session, moved up a per cent (Rs 8) at Rs 869. HLL ended marginally lower at Rs 175.

BHEL firmed up in late noon deals, and ended with a gain of 4% (Rs 20) at Rs 481. HPCL had a mixed outing, and moved up 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 329. SBI closed up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 484. MTNL, however, ended with a rupee loss at Rs 108.

Infosys rallied sharply in the mid-noon trades to finally end 3% higher (Rs 139) at Rs 4,741. HCL Tech, backed by impressive quarterly results, shot up 5% (Rs 11) to Rs 216. Satyam, too, displayed upward trend, and notched up nearly 6% gains (Rs 16) to Rs 306.

Grasim (up 7% or Rs 54 to Rs 858), Gujarat Ambuja (up 3% or Rs 9 to Rs 253), L&T (up 3% or Rs 14 to Rs 407) and ACC (up 5% or Rs 10 to Rs 214) ended with sharp gains.

Hero Honda at Rs 353 (up 9% or Rs 29), Bajaj at Rs 915 (up 2% or Rs 17) and Tata Motors at Rs 374 (up 3% or Rs 11) flared up on strong buying support.

Pharma stocks, too, ended on a buoyant note on steep buying support.
