Customers throng ICICI Bank branches in Delhi

April 12, 2003 15:45 IST

Several customers thronged the ICICI Bank branches and counters in Delhi on Saturday on rumours of liquidity problem but many returned without drawing money after the bank officials convinced them about its 'sound health'.

PTI correspondents, who visited the ICICI Bank branches in Delhi, found over a dozen account holders queuing up in front of the ATM in the main branch, which ICICI officials claimed was normal. Several persons were also found returning after making enquiries from the officials.

Sridhar Seshadri, regional head of ICICI Bank said, the average transactions in the main ATM branch was around 1000 a day and 'today (Saturday) 250-300 transactions had taken place so far (by afternoon), which was absolutely normal'.

In another ICICI ATM branch about half a dozen customers had queued up for withdrawing money. Withdrawals are usually higher during weekends, more so since there are several holidays next week, a bank official said.

The Reserve Bank of India communication certifying the 'sound' financial position was pasted in the branches and many customers were seen returning apparently feeling assured.

Some of the customers, however, looked worried even though the bank officials worked overtime to allay their fears and asked them not to panic.

The ICICI bank officials in all the ATM branches claimed that there was no liquidity crunch and adequate cash was available to meet the demands of the customers.
