ICICI Bank to ensure ATMs, branches have enough money

April 12, 2003 12:44 IST

ICICI Bank will ensure that all ATMs and branches have enough cash in the wake of 'panic withdrawals' through ATMs by customers in a few cities of Gujarat.

Terming the rumour of ICICI Bank going bankrupt as 'baseless,' the bank's spokesperson said: "We will move cash to ensure that all ATMs and branches stay liquid. If a depositor wants to withdraw, we will return his money."

The rumour had led to several depositors rushing for ATMs to withdraw money yesterday in many parts of Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat and Anand in Gujarat.

"The situation is much easier this morning, but people are still queuing up", the spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, the bank has announced plans to open eight new branches in Gujarat, including two in Ahmedabad, and setting up of an additional 35 ATMs in the state over the next few months.

With the additions, the network in Gujarat would stand at 30 branches and 150 ATMs.
