'He came, he saw, he got some cheap labour'

Bill Gates, Chairman of Microsoft Corp and the world richest man, was in India to commit $100 million (Rs 500 crore) to fight HIV/AIDS in the country.

His visit generated much interest in India. It also generated controversy.

We asked our readers what they thought about Bill Gates's visit. Was his visit an altruistic attempt to combat AIDS in India? Or was it a public relations exercise to strengthen the Microsoft brand?

While most strongly appreciated the Microsoft chief's aid, there were some who felt that Bill Gates had 'a hidden agenda' and was here only to further his business interests.

Here, we reproduce some of the responses generated.

Your Views: Gates is looking towards India as a huge market for his software. Especially the central and state governments, if they follow the e-governence like Chandrababu Naidu using Microsoft. Thats' why so much praise and charity. He is a pukka businessman and won't invest there if he sees no significant yield.

HAS ANY ONE OF OUR MINISTERS WITH CRORES OF ILL GOTTEN MONEY SPENT AT LEAST 1 RUPEE FROM THEIR POCKET FOR THE WELFARE OF THE PEOPLE. (SPENDING DURING THE ELECTION TIME FOR GET MORE MONEY DOES NOT COUNT). THE WORST PART OF THE WHOLE THING IS THAT THOSE MINISTERS WHO ARE AT OR LEAR HIS FEET WITH THEIR TOUNGES STICKING OUT WAITING FOR THE BONE TO POP UP FROM HIS WALLET.

We, Indians, must appreciate his generosity and his good words towards india and indians. Without his bussiness mind, there will be no big microsoft, will be no big mass indian software guys in US. God Bless Micorsoft, his generosity towards India Let's grow together with him.

Your Views: Business as well as pleasure. It is beyond dispute that Linux or any other operating system cannot make a significant dent in Microsoft's market share. It is not really necessary to make any salvaging attempt as is being portrayed. Since Microsoft and Bill Gates are Synonymous, It may look like he is here to promote his product. I think his visit was more of a public relations man who would bank on the manpower (read brainpower) from this country. As for charity to prevent and fight AIDS, he has been doing so since years in his home country. There is no business aspect to this. It was pure charity.

Your Views: Everyone entered this world with nothing and will leave this world with nothing. If Bill donated a part of his wealth for good cause, he certainly deserves appreciation for doing it. Why he choose India from other countries which have AIDS epidemic, probably because one reason might be he showing appreciation for all Indian techies for there hardwork and returning thanks for there ability to built a innovative and cleaner planet. As many know AIDS epidemic will explode in India if no certain measures are taken to control at this time. What did Indian government offered to tackle this problem? Nothing would be the answer, hope it will at least use the Bill's donation to the fullest to control AIDS from spreading. Even if his generosity was about business I still don't see any problem with it until something good is done to someone who really deserves it. There are many rich people in this world some might be even richer then Bill but are they generous enough to spend the money for good cause instead of building weapons of mass destruction is the question to be answered.

Your Views: Very typical of our culture to be suspicious of every move, even if it is for a good cause. A selfish mindset prevails in many of us where we give alms to others not because others need it, but because we need to cleanse our sins. The fact remains that there is money being donated by Bill Gates for a very important cause. And there are 15 chief ministers waiting in line for a share, for their respective states. As long as there is nothing illegal about the transaction, whats the big deal in Gates getting some visibility for Microsoft. He does not claim to be a Mother Teresa. And nobody believes him to be one either! Its high time that we gave priority to the essential aspects of our nations survival & prosperity (like removing poverty, disease, illiteracy, unemployment, communalism) before we pass judgement on a self-made great businessman like Gates. What India needs now is 1000 more Bill Gates and not a judgemental mindset. Gates has built a solid foundation for himself & his company BEFORE he started his charitable pursuits. Its high time India pursues that philosophy. And CM-Naidu is a perfect example who is more worried about building Andhra rather than a PM post.

So what if he wants to market his product? When somebody does something to our society, lets learn to accept it with grace and without doubting the person's intentions. Donating for the eradication of AIDS is a noble thing and has to be applauded.

Your Views: Its about brand imaging in the tough competitive market and rake in more profits in the long term. The soft face is a deliberative attempt to wipe of the ugly remarks it faces by monopolising by the computer operating system. It woud have been better if it had made the windows and its related software free of charge to the world or at a very less appropriate price. It should share its technology with other companies instead of shamelessly maintaining the monopoly by buying know how and patents from others and pricing them very high in the market. After certain period Windows should be made free of cost to people because its just like oxygen people breath to survive. BillGates has already got much more kahjana than what he contributed or is really worth. Its time he be out of this dirty business posing as a saviour to beggars of ignorant and poor indian middle class by vaccinating and spreading fear of AIDS. Thanks to indian media which spreads misinformation.

Your Views: I myself am not neither strongly anti nor pro MS and its products. So, I am not prejudiced. There are more than one angles to his interest in India.1)the lucrative market opportunities for MS products: in govts, schools, colleges, tech institutes 2)AND the enormous potential it will create for thousands of students coming out this system to be pro-MS programmers/developers.Gates realizes that India is the most important player in knowledge based technology in future,so he wants to tap the brightest minds for himself and MS.He gets a double divident on his investment.AND the revenues are not to be under-estimated.Opportunities in govts in India are enormous. Our people should tread carefully.Accept his donations if he claims they are unconnected to favours in return.Declaring that so and so govt body will ONLY use MS products very foolish (K'taka CM:either he was given him some dough or he is overcome with extreme joy about Gates 'honouring' him by meeting with him). Nobody in US would do that.Gates should have been told, "our tech guys will evaluate all options before making a decision".This is like killing competetition from other vendors and goes against basic need to save money.

Your Views: Bill Gates giving $100M to arrest AIDS shows the place India has in his large heart; and his investing $400M on his business here shows how a super perceptive businessman sees India on the world IT radar. In this interview, his remarks on IT education in India are significant. If he funds higher studies and research of world standards in computer science in select institutions of excellence in India he'd help releasing incredible intellectual energies into a field in which he is unquestionably the world leader. And it can be done now at the lowest comparative cost in India, as I'm sure he'd find it easy to accept. Thanks.

Your Views: Hi, Gates is a shrewd businessman and a very good marketing man. He is intelligent enough to understand the potentiality of Indian talent in the area of computing and he realises that if a growing number of that populace becomes knowledge enabled in Microsoft technologies he will capture a big market and it becomes very difficult to reverse that change. His philanthropy is certainly tied to that vision. Well, if it works well for India we should take it but we should be aware of his monopilistic ideas. India should promote Indian talent to create our own products and compete with his products. India should believe and invest in it. In a nutshell, we should accept his benevolance but shrewd enough not to fall prey to it.

Your Views: Does it really matter what his motive is? Even if it is business, we should welcome his initiatives. After all, has any Indian citizen done anything for the country that can compare with this? The people who can make a difference - politicians, industrialists, doctors, movie stars, cricketers, etc, are busy getting rich themselves and do not have the inclination or the time for giving something back to the country that has done so much for them. We Indians have no sense of collective well-being. We cannot do anything for each other. We never think beyond our own houses. Our country is going to the dogs, people are starving, dying of AIDS, lawlessness is increasing while politicians and their sidekicks are getting rich. When someone tries to help, we question his motive. What kind of people are we?

Your Views: Hello all, While I think Bill is a ruthless business man. His 100million dollars is more charity then anything else. People need to undesrtand there are people like Larry Ellison, Paul Allen who arent far behind bill and have the same business interests as bill have not given a penny to India. Not even the IMF gives that kind of money without some kinda strings attached. Saying that the donation has a ulterior motive is to belittle the act and behaviour that may be read as a sign of being unworthy of the gift. If Bill has business motives he is better of investign 100mil$ in his own business. This donation is going to save lifes of people who will probably never here of Bill. We as Indians need to realize that we are desperate need of such aid and respect those who give it and not be stupid enough to discourage them from helping us in the future.

Because, he mentioned clearly that he want to give something back to India, after realizing that Microsoft has been immensely benifitted by the significant contributions made by the Indian employees. I really appreciate Mr.Gates stand on this issue (donation towards containment of Aids/HIV virus). Let's introspect on one thing - How many politicians and Industrialists consider Aids as a serious problem? And how many of them tend to translate their concerns into action? I sincerely hope that our big wigs will also contribute generously to the cause. Jaihind!

Your Views: Mr Gates has clearly understood the growth in India's tech Market in coming years, With its huge population and education system India , it offers a broader economy . In next few years India has to develop infrastructure to tap the new innovations in technology . This Infrastructure will Create a Huge Tech Market. This Potential market Will be hugely profitable , if the Large Chunk of this Market is controlled. It has nothing to do with Linux, since Linux is not suitable for a common Man, who is the target in this business. The Technicalities involved in Linux are far more for a normal man to Understand, and also business offices will never use it. Regarding AIDS Epidemic . There are millions dying in Africa, why can't any company give 100m$ there. It's clear from any perspective that India's Tech Market will grow in next few years because of need in communication , education and service sectors. This will create a huge tech market and a broader economy. This is beneficial if this Market is tapped and tamed at a right time.

He knows the size of the developer community in India and he knows that this developer community is the most rapidly growing one in the world, and that they will influence the fortunes of Microsoft. Whatever be the case, Mr Gates (an american) and a symbol of capitalism, has out of the goodness of his and heart given India a much needed boost towards improving its standing in the world in multiple ways. But as with every generous work, especially when it comes from the richest man in the world, its man phsyche to think the other way around in trying to find his ulterior motives. It would be a good question to ask as to how many capitalists have you seen doing these kind of work especially outside their own geography. There could be a war b/w windows and linux, but even if thats the case, do you see any reason why he should feed polio drops to some kid belonging to a third world country. We should be greatfull that ambassadors like him atleast set a pattern for others to follow, i think it would be a good excercise to have a survey of our own politiciens and analyse how many of them carry out these kind of humanitarian work, for that matter any social work, i guess no body would be surprised with the results.. ravi

Indian are more divided today then at that time. Corruption is at its peak. If you cannot see, Watch Sonia Gandi today in Zee. They will do the same thing, get raw material (Programmers) from india and send finished one back from America (Microsoft product). Think about it - history is going to repeat again.

Your Views: Why are we so sceptical? It is a good thing that he is donating so much money. We should be concerned about spending the money in the right and not about why he is being so kind hearted. We have been taken for a ride too many times by our own people that we see an ulterior motive in everyone's actions. Why all the tension. Take the money and use it wisely. Note: The people who are in charge of all these donations must make it transparent as to where they are using it. We don't want ministers and MLAs building new houses from this.

Hope our MLAs, MPs and other leeches of the society don't eat this donation up. It is a shame that a foreigner donates money to us to take care of a disease. We were better of under the british.

Your Views: Microsoft and in that case Bill gates is a great fan and beliver of Developers. Being one himself, he understand the ins and outs of all the problems and hardwork that one has to put in development. Talking of software and hardware development in USA, one can not overlook India. Spending some million $ during his trip (whatever name you give it) is nothing for him.

Your Views: Bill Gates is one of the HUMBLE, GENEROUS rich man in the world. I dont think he needs to worry about competitors at this stage, as there will be no other unique concept of MICROSOFT in this world again. The reason for kindness and concern for INDIA may lie in his self realisation to show his gratitude for LIFE in general, when a man achieves almost things in life.

Your Views: There comes a point in a mans life, who had amassed a lot of wealth, on what needs to be done with all the wealth. So giving away a part of it for the betterment of humanity weighs a lot on ones mind. But once a businessman, always a businessman. My view is that Mr.Gates trip to India is both business and personal, Microsoft willnot miss a chance to capitalize on Mr.Gates's PR skills. As it is mentioned in Godfather. There is no business that doesnt gets personal, eventhough it is often said that "Its just business nothing personal".

Your Views: I think Mr. Bill Gates is a great businessman. His generosity should not be considered otherwise, other businessmen should come forward with some contributions to combat the scourge of AIDS in India & elsewhere. At the same time Mr. Gates should have a concern for the popularity of Linux specially in the developing countries.

Your Views: Any mature business man, including Mr. Bill Gates, will always have a combination of goals for his investment of time, money and effort in any endeavour. He will always expect returns for his 'business investment' with a measure in dollars and an effective return (in terms of number of aids victims helped etc) for his altruistic investments. This is going to be true for any constructive individual, in a mature society, having any 'resources' for investment. Hence I would vote to say that his trip now is a combination of both and I wish him success in both his goals. I am sure his altruistic goals will always enhance his business deals and his corporation. He cannot separate the two and so can't we.

Your Views: What is wrong with us ? Why are we even having this stupid debate. I for one believe that Bill Gates has a long standing record of generosity and altruism. In fact it's a bloody shame that the Govt of India does not have a well thought out plan for tackling AIDS in this country and we need someone from outside to remind us of the epidemic that is looming large.
