Verma's son to be in police custody till Apr 12

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

R L Chug, additional district and sessions judge sent Siddarth Verma, son of B P Verma former chairman of Central Board of Excise and Customs, Bhavna Pandey and Rajiv Kumar Sharma to police custody for another three days. They would now be produced in the court on April 12 in the afternoon.

B P Verma, who was remanded to five days of police custody on April 7, however, could not be interrogated by the CBI as he complained of chest pain and breathless and has to hospitalised in Aashlok Hospital within hours of reaching the CBI headquarters in South Delhi.

The CBI asked for the police custody of three accused on the plea that they have to be confronted with B P Verma who was still lying in hospital and hence the process of confronting could not be completed in last three days of police remand of the same accused.

The CBI also produced the case diary for the information of the court. The judge after seeing couple of records retired to his chamber to dictate the order.

The CBI plea for further police remand was contested by Ashok Arora counsel for Siddarth Verma, R S Dhaka counsel for Ms Pandey and Gurdial Singh counsel for Rajiv Kumar Sharma. The judge, however, rejected their plea after seeing the case diary.

Bhavna Pandey who was present in the court could be heard saying that police remand was better than judicial remand.

Siddarth Verma was glancing through the pages of the latest issue of a weekly news magazine printed and published from New Delhi and what they had written about him and his father.

He even paused to have a good look at the picture of the hotel Moon Maharani in Nainital where B P Verma has alleged to have made huge investments.

The court heard the arguments on the bail application of Sharvan Kumar by his counsel Dinesh Mathur and the CBI's advocated U S Prasad. He reserved the judgement till April 10.

Meanwhile, the CBI has registered another case possessing disproportionate assets against B P Verma former chairman of Central Board of Excise and Customs.

They have also arrested Mohan Gupta, a Noida-based businessman who owns a huge farm house in Brijwasan in South Delhi.

Verma is alleged benami owner of the farm house which is in the name of Mohan Gupta.

According to sources in CBI fresh case against senior Verma would remove any doubt that he was not involved in corruption cases.

The CBI has still not taken up this matter in the court, though it was expected to do so on Monday.
