After checking into the hotel, we took a long motor boat ride to Viper Island. The boat ride was beautiful with green hilly islands on both sides and the greenish blue sea below.
The Andamans are a group of islands on the Bay of Bengal, well connected by road and water transport that ferry you from one island to another on boats.
Port Blair is a cosmopolitan city where people from all over India have found a home.
The people are friendly and looked happy. Although you hear a smattering of different languages, Hindi is most widely spoken.
But there are only two vegetarian restaurants in the entire city and only one is really good, Icy Spicy, where we ate many times during our trip.
The cost of living seemed very less compared to the metros. A distance of 5 km in an autorickshaw cost us just Rs 15 which was a huge surprise for me, a Chennaite.
It is a hip and happening city with bars, beach resorts and stores where you can buy pretty much anything.
Viper Island was where the local jail was built in 1867. The gallows, the Cellular Jail and the Memorial Park outside the jail reminded us that India's independence was earned by our forefathers, the freedom fighters who paid with their lives.
