The Adidas mat

July 21, 2008
Cost: Around Rs 1,900 (I got it in a sale for Rs 950, hence can only provide the approx figure).

Available: At Adidas showrooms across the country.

Star rating: None

Shred factor: None

Steady or slippery: The top of the mat can be very slippery. It does not provide a great grip even in basic poses.

Luxury scale: Okay for those who think brand matters.

Level of practice: Only beginner.

The first complaint is that this mat is the most slippery I have ever used. It is possible that it may improve with usage, but that is a big question mark. Also, the Adidas logo on the mat is one-foot long (how OTT can you get?) and is placed right on the spot where your feet will hit it or your head will touch it (depending on where you stand). Since the letters are uneven this can be rather distracting, especially if you are doing the sun salute (since that is the spot where you foot is going to hit) or if doing a headstand (since that is where you are most likely to place your hands).

The brand name should be discreetly placed instead of spread out like that; rather counter-productive as far as yoga practice is concerned. Also, your hands and feet do tend to slide too much on the top (this is the only mat where I experienced that problem) while negotiating even simple poses so you wonder why this mat costs that much. The Yoga Wenge mats (see following slides), costing a fraction of that, are more firm.
