Lohagad

Lonavala/ Khandala on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is, for most Mumbaikars, the most sought after weekend getaway. But if you are keen on giving the crowded Bushi Dam a miss, then drive a few kilometres ahead to Lohagad for a small excursion into the mountains.

The drive to Lohagad, 125 km from Mumbai is a treat.

Two kilometers from Malavali station is a small village where the exquisitely carved Bhaje caves are located. You need to park your vehicle at this village. A 15-minute hike from here will take you to the entrance of the 12th century Buddhist caves.

While Bhaje with its 18 caves is worth a visit, the trek to Lohagad Fort is the chief attraction. Half an hour on the trail a majestic view of the valley opens up. Being popular among trekkers the route has several refreshment stalls serving steaming cups of tea.

The fort is in good condition. There are easy rock-cut steps leading to the top. Be careful, it gets slippery in the rains.

Two interesting spots at the fort include a tiny stream flowing upwards due to the force of the wind and Vinchu Kata, a ridge resembling the scorpion's sting.

How to get there

Take either the NH 4 via Panvel or the Mumbai--Pune Expressway to Lonavala. Malavali station is just 20 minutes from here.
Alternatively take a bus to Lonavala. Take a local train from Lonavala to the next station Malavali. A 10-minute rickshaw ride from Malavali will take you to the base village Bhaje.

Where to stay

Unless you want to spend the night at the fort or under the sky, the best option would be to stay at Lonavala. For details, click here.
