Bhandardara

Rugged mountains covered in stunning green, birds chirping in excitement at the crack of dawn and mist lying low on the clear blue waters of Wilson Dam lend sleepy Bhandardara special magic.

Located 180 km northeast of Mumbai, Bhandardara boasts of the third highest waterfall in the country. Nearby the gushing waters of Pravara River plunging 170 feet from the Western Ghats to form the Randha Falls is a magnificent sight.

For the adventurous there are lots of trekking options. The highest peak of the Sahyadris, Mount Kalsubai is about half an hour away from Bhandardara Lake. Alternatively, you can boat across the tranquil waters of the lake to go to Ratanwadi. A three-hour hike from here will take you to Ratangad Fort that offers fascinating views of the valley.

The religious tourist can visit the ancient Amruteshwar temple at Ratanwadi, which has been declared a protected monument. The Shivling in this temple is installed a few feet below floor level and is believed to be submerged in water during the rains.

If you like to laze around, then book a room at the MTDC Resort on the edge of Bhandardara Lake.
