His best moment in the sun came when in Antigua in 2004 he regained the record for the highest individual score in Tests and became the first person in Test history to record 400 runs.
But controversy trailed the epic innings too. Australian captain Ricky Ponting led the brigade suggesting that Lara had been "selfish" to play for the 400 and lost valuable time for his team, thus letting England get away with a draw.
