The land of the Nawabs is famous for - what else? - Nawabi cuisine. This school of cuisine is characterised by richness of preparation, ditto taste.

Aficionados swear by the biryani, which to the foodie characterises the quintessence of the royal kitchens of Hyderabad. Add to this the famed tandoor, which again the locals specialise in, and Hyderabad becomes the nearest thing to heaven for the diehard non-vegetarian. For the herbivores there are city specials like mirchi ka salan, kulchas and baghara baigan and sweetmeats like khubani ka mitha and double ka mitha.

And then there is the typically chilly hot Andhraite cuisine. Don't miss out on sampling royyala pulusu, or vankayakura, or pulihora. And the very, very brave should try the green bullet chilly bajji.

Add to this the abundant availability of South Indian staples of the idli-dosa variety, and one fact becomes as apparent as your waistline: Hyderabad is not for the calorie conscious.
