Relations with China not detrimental to India, says NSCN

The outlawed National Socialist Council of Nagaland, NSCN, has vowed that its ''relations'' with China will not be detrimental to India's interests.

The NSCN maintains it does not want the involvement of bureaucrats in the talks with the Centre for a permanent political solution to the Naga problem.

''At the expense of India, we shall never seek relations with China,'' NSCN chairman Isak Chishi Swu and general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah in a an inteview to the North East Sun.

''India should be strong enough, that is in our interest and to our benefit, as also to ensure peace and security in Asia and in the neighbouring areas,'' stated Muivah.

About the involvement of bureaucrats in the talks, he said, ''When everything has been worked out, you can't go back to square one again. I know the Indian Constitution but it would also help if one knew that the Nagas also have their history. These bureaucrats want to interpret the entire universe on their own terms,'' Muivah said.

Discussing former Union minister Rajesh Pilot's involvement in the process, Muivah said, ''At one stage, Mr Pilot was talking to us...We think he is quite an understanding person. As far as we are concerned, he is serious and earnest in his approach to the problems. One of the best qualities about him is that he is prepared to understand things, and with this kind of attitude one can make a headway.''

On the confusion about the cease-fire declared on August 1, he stated it could be the handiwork of the press or some vested interests. ''The cease-fire, as we understand it, should cover all Naga inhabited areas, not a particular area or sub division or district,'' he added.

The Naga leader expressed great regard for former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao. "A great man. We respect him," continued Muivah. "He alone has recognised that the problem can be solved thorugh political means"
