145 defence staff face corruption cases

Less than a month after a survey revealed that defence personnel were the least corrupt, the defence ministry has come up with the revelation that 145 defence and civilian staff were involved in corruption cases.

In all, 94 civilian and 51 service personnel were involved in 100 cases of corruption, dishonesty and assets disproportionate to income investigated by the defence ministry's vigilance department in 1995-96.

The breakup of the civilians involved is: group 'A' -- 45, group 'B' -- 22, group 'C' -- 27 and group 'D' -- nil.

The breakup of the service personnel is: officers -- 38, junior commissioned officers -- 4, other ranks/ sailors/ airmen -- 9. The number of complaints received during the year was 268.
