Coverage: Indo-US Nuclear Deal

The national executive of the Bharatiya Janata Party blamed the United Progressive Alliance government of not telling the entire truth about the nuclear deal with United States.

BJP national president Rajnath Singh, while delivering the inaugural address, said that the issue of fuel supply to India in the wake of the deal coming through was only an assurance and not a commitment.

Assurances die with persons, but commitments don't, Singh said, adding, "What is the basis of the deal? The prime minister had told the House that fuel supply would be an important part of the deal, but the latest news coming out gives us an indication that fuel supply is merely an assurance and not a commitment.

An assurance may take years to be fulfilled or may not even happen, the BJP national president said.

BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad, when questioned as to whether the BJP would renegotiate the deal if voted into power, said that the option is open. We have made our stand clear on the issue and there is no need to further reiterate on this.

Singh further added that the BJP has no grievance whatsoever with the United States of America. The US administration may have acted in its own interest, but it is pitiable the manner in which the Indian government has dealt with the issue. The government is not telling the whole truth about this issue and this is deplorable, Singh further stated.

Vote of confidence:
The BJP's national executive made light of the manner in which the trust vote was won. The BJP termed it as 'Note Tantra' and not 'Lok Tantra'. The manner in which the trust vote was won has shaken the faith of the people in democracy and thanks to this, the government is unwilling to face the Parliament.

The monsoon session of parliament has been postponed and this is only an indication that the UPA is scared of facing Parliament. The BJP accused the UPA of first being a captive of the Left and now of the SP.

Terrorism [Images]:
The manner in which terrorism has been handled is deplorable, Singh said at the meet. Earlier India had emerged as a key player in the fight against imperialism and now the time has come to fight terror in a similar manner.

The UPA being soft on terror is a known fact, but today the worrisome factor is that the government is losing sight of national interest. The manner in which the proceedings pertaining to SIMI [Images] at the tribunal was handled is an indication of this.

While on one hand the government tells the Supreme Court that SIMI is behind almost every incident of terror, some of the ministers in the very same government term the outfit as a cultural one. All one can say is that there is a chronic disorder in UPAs approach to fighting terror, Singh pointed out.

The BJP also took stock of the rising trend of economic terrorism in the country. On one hand the government does little to stop the flooding of fake currency into the Indian market and on the other the national security advisor says that fake currency has become a new form of economic terrorism.

Foreign policy:
The BJP condemned the manner in which issues pertaining to foreign policy was being handled by the government. China continues to indulge in construction near the Himalayas and our government does not seem to care. India has as much stake as China in the Himalayas and remaining silent on this issue is not the right approach.

The BJP demanded that stringent action be taken where the ISI is concerned. Referring to the Indian embassy bombing at Kabul, Singh said that the government has openly stated that the ISI is behind the episode and on the other it does nothing to bring ISI under the International terror watch.
