'No government can claim it is 100% successful'

May 23, 2007
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherji believes the Congress party has led the United Progressive Alliance coalition government very successfully these past three years and is learning coalition dharma.

In an interview to All India Radio and Kalyani Shankar, Mukherji -- widely believed to be one of India's most intelligent politicians -- discussed the UPA government's achievements and admitted that even the best can be improved.

On the low key celebration of three years in office

First of all, I do not believe in this type of celebration or annual rating because the government is meant for five years -- whether it lasts for five years or not. The government's performance is judged for a full five years. It is not for me to mark. It is for the people to mark. I am part of the government.
