Bihar's fast-track justice

October 13, 2008
More than 20,000 criminals, including criminal-turned parliamentarians and legislators, have been convicted in the last two-and-a-half years in Bihar, a state known for lawlessness since decades.

The high rate of conviction, a rarity, was possible due to initiative started by the Bihar government to check the crime.

Sources in the Bihar Home Department said fast track courts have convicted and sentenced hundreds of hardcore criminals for crimes like murder, kidnapping, extortion, and robbery.

The result -- crime rate in the state has dipped, says Bihar Police spokesperson Anil Sinha.
