How Anshuman of Bankura got into MIT

May 13, 2008
Text: Indrani Roy Mitra

To him, the United States of America was just one of the countries he would find in the Atlas until a few months back. But Anshuman Panda of Bankura's Sadhurdanga-Panchbaga, 300 km off Kolkata, took the country a bit more seriously when he came to know of the US Scholastic Aptitude Test from a newspaper advertisement.

Acute sinusitis having axed his IIT dream earlier, Anshuman made up for his loss by grabbing a seat at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology, scoring a neat 2,400 in mathematics and physics.

His perfect score in these two subjects has earned for him a full scholarship though he has not done that well in critical reading and writing.
