How Anshuman of Bankura got into MIT

May 13, 2008
Ever struggling to make both ends meet with a paltry Rs 3,500 that Anshuman's father Bidhan Chandra Panda earns from private tuitions, this Higher Secondary examinee's family cannot afford a daily newspaper at home. Till about a couple of years back, there was no electricity in Anshuman's home as his parents could not pay the stipulated sum of Rs 10,000.

His spotting the SAT advertisement in the newspaper was sheer luck.

Knowing that the form had to be filled online, Anshuman headed for a local cyber cafe. After a crash course on the Internet and days of surfing, he chose four universities -- MIT, Harvard, Stanford and Caltech -- unaware that those were the best.
