June 5 is world environment day. The day holds more relevance in the 21st century than ever before.

Despite attempts and initiatives, global warming is taking place at an alarming rate. According to a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, recent climate changes and climate variations are beginning to have effects on many natural and human systems.

Sea-level rise and human development are together contributing to loss of coastal wetlands and mangroves, and increasing damage from coastal flooding in many areas, says the report.

Within the next two to three decades, it is projected that the Himalayan glacier would melt leading to increased flooding, and rock avalanches from destabilised slopes. It would also affect water resources within the next two to three decades.

The situation is grim but can be rectified. How have you been contributing to protect the environment? Tell us.
