China hopes to create a new Guinness record in September when one lakh people will sing the same song simultaneously, the organisers said today.

The song, titled "Liuyang River" based on a folk  melody in central China's Hunan province, has been popular with generations of Chinese for decades.

The mass singing has been designated as a major event  at the opening ceremony of the province's third tourism festival, to be held from September 12 to 14, at Liuyang city,  where the song is said to have originated.

According to officials in Liuyang, hundreds of  thousands of people will gather around both banks of the  Liuyang river that flows through the city and 100,000 of them will sing the song together.  Officials said they would seek to list the event in the famous Guinness Book of World Records
