Ammunition laden bag found in Rajpath

May 18, 2003 22:59 IST

A bag containing ammunition was recovered from the Rajpath area of Delhi, the police said on Sunday.

Police sources said the bag contained two live cartridges of AK-47 rifle, two empty .38mm cartridges, five empty 9mm cartridges, 16 empty 22mm cartridges and some Urdu literature.

The recovery came amid intercepts of messages from Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed to carry out suicide attacks on Parliament, Reserve Bank of India and India Gate.

Following the recovery, security around vital installations, including Parliament House, India Gate and Reserve Bank of India, was further tightened.

Recently, a high alert was sounded when a large quantity of explosives was recovered near India Gate, prompting authorities to close the monument to public for few weeks in March.
