Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Friday took a critical view of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's trident distribution programme.

In his address on the second day of the Sangh Parivar conclave in New Delhi, Advani wondered whether such programmes were good for the image of the VHP, which had implemented several good projects, including the Ekal Vidyalayas [single teacher schools in remote areas], Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh sources said.

VHP leaders Ashok Singhal and Pravin Togadia sat silently and heard Advani's counsel, the sources said.

The sources said Swadeshi Jagran Manch leaders S Gurumurthy and Murlidhar Rao expressed serious reservations over the government's economic policies, particularly divestment of the strategic oil sector and profit-making public sector units.

On the Ayodhya issue, the VHP leaders reiterated their demand for a parliamentary legislation to enable construction of a Ram temple. They also briefed the participants about the deliberations of the high-level committee of the Ram Janambhoomi movement, which concluded at Ayodhya on Thursday.
