Excavation order challenged in SC

March 13, 2003 18:43 IST

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking stay of the Allahabad high court's directive to the Archaeological Survey of India to excavate the disputed site in Ayodhya.

The petition, filed by one Naved Yarkhan in his personal capacity, says the directive is violative of the Supreme Court order for maintenance of status quo at the disputed site till the disposal of the title suits.

On March 5, the high court had ordered the ASI to undertake excavation within a week and complete the process within a month to ascertain whether a temple existed at the place where the Babri Masjid was built.
