Pakistan a hotbed of terrorists: PM

January 20, 2003 22:16 IST

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Monday said no action was being taken against Pakistan, which had become a hotbed of terrorism.

"Although Pakistan is a member of the international coalition formed to fight terrorism, it is there that the terrorists are gathering," Vajpayee said before leaving for Delhi after a three-day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

He was commenting on President Pervez Musharraf's statement that Pakistan could be the international community's target after Iraq.

"They [Pakistan] have contacts with terrorists in other parts of the globe... We request our friends in the international arena to put a stop to the increasing terrorism through Pakistan."

Asked about the state governments' view of the Centre's divestment policy, Vajpayee said there were some differences, but no political party or group had opposed divestment as such.

"The policy [divestment] has come to a stage where it is irreversible," he said adding that the government will see to it that unemployment does not rise because of divestment.

He said something had to be done to deal with loss-making public undertakings.

Asked about the moves to curb poaching in Indian waters, Vajpayee said, "No permanent solution can be adopted for poaching. The sea is vast... The only solution is to be alert and careful."
