NSCN (I-M) leaders meet Brajesh Mishra

January 17, 2003 23:05 IST

Top NSCN(I-M) leaders on Friday met National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra in Delhi as part of the ongoing negotiations to take the Naga peace process forward.

Mishra's meeting with NSCN(I-M) chairman Isak Chisi Swu and general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah at South Block lasted one hour, official sources said.

Swu and Muivah, who were scheduled to leave India on January 20, have extended their stay by at least four days in view of the 'positive progress' in the negotiations with the Centre to solve the decades-old Naga insurgency problem.

Meanwhile, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, who had held three rounds of parleys with the two leaders abroad, is also understood to have held talks with the Naga leadership.

Zoramthanga, who arrived in Delhi on Thursday, told reporters that he had received feelers from several other insurgent outfits, including those from Manipur and Tripura, in the northeast expressing a desire to hold peace talks with the Centre.

The NSCN (I-M) leadership has so far met Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Deputy Lal Kishenchand Advani, Defence Minister George Fernandes, Finance Minister Jaswant Singh and former prime ministers V P Singh and I K Gujral, besides some other politicians. They are also expected to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Swu and Muivah will begin their two-day official-level parleys with the Centre's representatives K Padmanabhaiah, Intelligence Bureau chief K P Singh and Secretary (Border Management) in the home ministry R C A Jain, on January 20.
