January 15, 2003 19:06 IST

The Karnataka government on Wednesday decided to release 4,500 cusecs of Cauvery water daily to Tamil Nadu for a week.

Law Minister D B Chandre Gowda said the decision was taken to to save the standing Samba crop in Tamil Nadu.

On Monday in New Delhi, Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna had agreed to release 1,200 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu till February. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, however, was not happy with the offer and had demanded 4,500 cusecs daily for 14 days.

There has been no reaction on Karnataka's fresh offer from Tamil Nadu as yet.
