Noted painter B C Sanyal dead

January 09, 2003 15:45 IST

Noted painter B C Sanyal died in New Delhi on Thursday after a brief illness, family sources said. He was 102.

Born early last century in Dhubri, Assam, Sanyal carved out a niche for himself in Lahore where he started the Lahore College of Arts.

Sanyal was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1987.

The themes of his paintings focused on struggle, especially by the economically deprived sections of the society.

His well-known paintings include The Flying Scarecrow, Despair and Way to Peace, which shows Gandhi with a Hindu and Muslim child.
