Government suspends Mirwaiz's passport

January 09, 2003 23:26 IST

The Centre on Thursday suspended former All-Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq's passport for four weeks.

A notice, served at his Delhi residence, said his passport was being suspended under Section 10 (A) of the Passport Act, as the government was satisfied that his travel abroad was not in the interest of the nation.

The Mirwaiz described the government's action as "unfortunate". He said he will meet Hurriyat chairman Abdul Ghani Bhat to discuss the future course of action.

The Awami Action Committee, headed by the Mirwaiz, described it as "an act of frustration".

In a statement in Srinagar the AAC, which the Mirwaiz represents in the Hurriyat, said the separatist leader "is bold and truth-loving... [he has] been voicing the aspirations of millions of Kashmiris in the international forums for a peaceful settlement of Kashmir dispute."

"The government is coming increased pressure to resolve the Kashmir issue peacefully," it said.
