17 terrorists killed in two encounters in J&K

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar | April 22, 2003 14:34 IST

At least 17 terrorists were killed in two separate encounters in the Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu region on Tuesday.

Police sources in Jammu said that at least 13 militants were gunned down by the security forces in an ongoing fierce gun battle at Kaka Hill near Surankote in the border district of Poonch. The sources said the security forces have surrounded the militants who were hiding in thickets.

More reinforcements were rushed to the spot and the area has been sealed off. In another encounter security forces shot dead four militants during a cordon and search operation at Kalakote in the Rajouri district. The gun battle was still continuing, sources added.
