Mahesh Bhatt's son held for assault; released on bail

By a Correspondent in Mumbai | December 23, 2002 12:43 IST

Rahul Bhatt, son of noted film director Mahesh Bhatt, who was arrested on Sunday night for assault after a scuffle with Ranvir Shorey, boyfriend of Pooja Bhatt, was released on Monday afternoon by the Bandra local court on a surety of Rs 5000.

The police had booked Rahul Bhatt under section 324 of the Indian Penal Code for aggravated assault.

When asked for the reason for assault, Mahesh Bhatt said, "Pooja [his daughter] was assaulted by her boyfriend (Ranvir Shorey) who was drunk. She was recovering from a surgery. My son Rahul heard her cry for help and responded. I can only say that alcohol plays havoc with otherwise nice people. Ranvir needs help."
