We don't need 'tainted' judges: Northeast lawyers

December 10, 2002 00:29 IST

Lawyers across the Northeast on Monday boycotted courts and held protest meetings against the proposed transfer of two 'tainted' judges to the Gauhati high court.

Gauhati High Court Bar Association president Arup Borbora said the fraternity of lawyers in the region's seven states kept away from courts and held rallies and meetings against the proposed move.

The bar association, which called for the 'protest day', held a peaceful meeting in the premises of the high court with participants from various other courts.

The meeting, Borbora said, expressed its displeasure and anguish over the transfer move, saying the Gauhati high court, which has the largest territorial jurisdiction, appears to have become "a dumping ground".

"A judge who is unfit to be a judge in one high court cannot be dumped in another high court and it is not in the public interest to allow a tainted judge to carry out judicial work," he said.

The judges whose integrity is being questioned by the lawyers are Justice Amarbir Singh Gill of the Punjab and Haryana high court and Justice Gopal Gowda of the Karnataka high court.
