December 06, 2002 22:52 IST

A Correspondent in Mumbai

Two persons were killed and 28 injured in a blast in a BEST bus parked outside Ghatkopar railway station (on the west side), the reverberations of which were felt on platform no 1 and shattered the window panes of a train.

However, none of the passengers in the bus were injured, DCP Jayjeet Singh (Zone 8) said. All the injured were passers-by, he said.

They have been rushed to the Rajawadi hospital.

The blast occurred in an empty BEST bus, which was parked at the bus stop outside the station in north-east Mumbai, he said.

The police is trying to ascertain the cause of the blast, which occurred around 1845 IST and destroyed the rear portion of the bus.

The place is generally crowded with passengers and hawkers and the site of the blast is close to the exit from the station.

Hospital sources told PTI that one of the deceased has been identified as Kumar Raju Ranjan.
