Surya looks back at his Ghajini days

Aamir Khan's Ghajini is breaking all box office records, and Suriya -- who starred in the Tamil original -- gave his approval as well. The Tamil star looks back at his own Ghajini days, way back in 2005, and tells Shobha Warrier his experiences.

Ghajini was offered to you after it was rejected by many actors. What made you accept the film?

I found the basic story -- the part about the memory loss -- very interesting. It was something not dealt with in Tamil before. I thought even a layman could understand the medical problem. The screenplay was very exciting too.

Director A R Murugadoss' one-hour narration with the minutest details was enough for me to accept the film. The detailing was very interesting. I could visualise the film.

Another factor that made me accept the film was that Murugadoss could convince Vijayakanth Sir to do a different film like Ramana. Even the climax of the film was rather unusual. I knew he would come out with something different in Ghajini too.

Did you ever wonder why other actors rejected the film?

Not really. It has been happening right from my first film -- I have been accepting rejected films. Nanda was offered to Ajith before it came to me. I was not the first choice of Kaakha Kaakha either. Ajith had even done some promotional shoots for my first film, Nerukku Ner before it came to me. I think fortune favoured me in all these rejects!
