March 12, 2003 16:26 IST

A visiting official of Volkswagen, Europe's largest automobiles manufacturer, has told the Tamil Nadu chief minister that Chennai is one of the most likely locations for the company's manufacturing plant.

Volkswagen is planning to set up a light commercial vehicle and car manufacturing plant in India.

In his meeting with Jayalalithaa, the head of the company's India project team, Helmuth Schuster, assured her that "Chennai will be one of the important locations being examined for the plant in India," an official press release said in Chennai on Wednesday.

Schuster apprised Jayalalithaa of his company's plans tolocate a car manufacturing plant in India and explained to her the project details.

She assured all necessary support for the German venture and welcomed the initiatives of Volkswagen in this regard.

Schuster also expressed his company's desire to offer assistance for projects for street children in the state.
