Himalayas could hold major oil, gas reserves

The mighty Himalayas seemed to be the next target for discovery of prolific reserves of oil and gas in the promising Assam-Arakan sedimentary basin in the country, according to a study of Director General of Hydrocarbons.
"The sedimentary data of the Himalayan region is similar to that of the Andes range of mountains. If this region can have so much of oil and gas reserves, why cannot our mighty Himalayas have the same," DGH Avinash Chandra said in his presentation on "Prospectivity of Indian basins and new finds," at the Petrotech 2003 in New Delhi on Saturday.
He said the Assam-Arakan basin had some 14 exposed anticlines.
"In fact, there is a lot of opportunity to explore hydrocarbons in this sector as the features indicate possibility of huge reserves," Chandra said.
In the future, he said, there were several opportunities in the north-eastern region, which has the capability of having world class discoveries.
"Here too the structural styles have striking similarities with the premier geological structures of Iran and Saudi Arabia," the DGH informed.
