Orissa orders probe into Gridco bungling

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

Orissa government has ordered a probe into the purchases made by the Grid Corporation of Orissa Limited under power sector reforms programmes funded by the Word Bank, State Energy Minister Surya Narayan Patra said on Wednesday.

The corporation is incurring a loss of about Rs 22 crore (Rs 220 million), on an average, every month whereas it has a stock of materials and equipment worth Rs 46 crore (Rs 460 million) that has no immediate utility.

The World Bank had sanctioned $290 million for Orissa power sector reform. While $112 million was earmarked for the infrastructure development and system upgradation of Gridco, the corporation has completed project worth only $67 million so far, he said.

Chairman and chief managing director of Gridco Priyabrata Patnaik has been directed to enquire into this purchase and submit a report to the government at the earliest.
