Goa plans mega IT event in Dec

Sandesh Prabhudesai in Goa

Goa is organising what is touted as India's biggest ever event on information technology, involving over one hundred luminaries, from December 1-2.

With a simple theme -- Information Technology for Society -- the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with active participation from the state government, plans to provide a platform to deliberate upon issues confronting the Indian society in its endeavour to prosper in the IT sector.

India's top brass in the IT field, including chief executive officers of IT firms, experts and even a few politicians and bureaucrats who have implemented the IT agenda effectively in their respective states have been invited for the two-day event.

Organisers say personalities like Dr F C Kohli (Tata Consultancy Services), K R Naik (D-link), Vinay Deshpande (Encore Software Limited), Satish Jha (Digital Partners'), S Ramani (National Centre for Software Technology) and Prithpal Singh (BSNL) have confirmed their participation.

During the two-day event the delegates will discuss on:

  • What kind of IT does the society need,
  • What markets cater to the society's need,

  • What the SWOTs (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) of the IT industry are, and

  • The future plans.

According to GCCI president Nitin Kunkolienkar, the meet will go beyond computer literacy programmes and search for the IT needs of the society while also seeking out new IT markets other than the existing traditional ones.

Since Goa is the venue of the meet, an attempt would be made to chart out the state's agenda in IT. As its draft IT policy is being debated upon, the state government expects valuable inputs from the experts to help boost the sector in Goa.

"Research and development is one field we plan to concentrate upon," states Anupam Saraf, a vice chairperson of the Goa Infotech Corporation.

To facilitate the participants to register online, a website www.goa-agenda.com has already been put up while interested persons are also requested to communicate at info@goa-agenda.com.
