Jaswant holds meetings with finance ministry officials

The new Finance Minister Jaswant Singh, who faces the challenging task of carrying forward economic reforms, on Tuesday had a series of meetings with top officials, including RBI Governor Bimal Jalan.

Singh, who swapped places with Yashwant Sinha in the major Cabinet reshuffle on Monday, will assume his new office on Wednesday.

Singh had a meeting with Economic Affairs Secretary C M Vasudev, Revenue Secretary S Narayan and Expenditure Secretary C S Rao, apart from Jalan.

As Singh would also be looking after the Department of Company Affairs, he had a detailed meeting with DCA Secretary V K Dhall.

Apart from paying special attention to toning up the tax machinery to improve revenue collection and widen the tax base, Singh has the arduous task of pushing forward reforms, particularly the passage of several pending economic bills including Fiscal Responsibility legislation and amendments to Banking Act, Companies Act, UTI Act and SEBI Act.
