Infosys plans foray in China

Infosys Technologies Ltd, India's second-largest exporter of software, said on Thursday it plans to open a branch in China, which it sees as a huge potential market due to the enormous growth there in hardware.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, who visited Infosys's Bangalore offices during a trip to India, said he had instantly approved a request by the company to open an office in Shanghai.

Infosys officials could not immediately give details of their plans for China.

"It (China) has a huge pool of talent and also a potential market," managing director Nandan Nilekani told reporters after Zhu's visit.

Infosys's plans are a small but significant step forward for India's growing software industry which has in the past courted the United States as its main market but is now tapping Europe and its Asian neighbours following a slowdown in the US market.
