Kelkar panel debate intensifies

BS Political Bureau in New Delhi

The political debate on the Kelkar committee recommendations deepened with the Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentary party asking MPs to submit their suggestions by December 25 on changes to be made in the panel's report.

The BJP had set up a group, headed by former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh, to evaluate the political impact of the recommendations. Although Singh is still in Gujarat, a meeting of the group was held here last night.

"We have asked party MPs and leaders from states as well as our cadres to come forward with suggestions on the Kelkar committee report on tax reforms," party spokesman V K Malhotra told reporters in New Delhi.

Malhotra said: "There are some good things in the Kelkar recommendations and some bad. Our main concern is the poor, the middle-class, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, senior citizens and employees. There should be no financial burden on this section. They should get relief."

Malhotra also briefed reporters on the parliamentary party meeting presided over by Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, in the absence of Prime Minister Vajpayee who was busy with engagements relating to Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit.
