The temple is dedicated to Shiva-Parvati

The enormous temple complex is dedicated to Shiva and Parvathi.

Parvathi is also known as Meenakshi (the fish-eyed goddess).

The original temple was built by Kulasekara Pandya but the present temple was built by the Nayaks who ruled Madurai from the 16th to the 18th century.
