'These monuments will generate revenue'

April 17, 2009
When asked about allegations that Mayawati is only constructing huge statutes at the cost of the state exchequer, Mehrotra says, "You are getting it wrong. You see there are so many people who are employed on this work. Moreover, let me tell you when the Taj Mahal was being built this kind of criticism was there, but today it is a big tourist place. The same way, all these statues in future would become a tourist place."

"The Taj Mahal was the last monument built in Uttar Pradesh before Independence," he adds. "In the last 60 years there has not been a single monument built by any other government. These monuments will generate a lot of revenue for the state because people will come to see them from outside."
