BJP retains Surat (West) assembly seat

January 11, 2003 12:16 IST

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday retained the Surat (West) assembly constituency in Gujarat with its candidate Bhavnaben Chapatwala defeating the Congress' Naishadh Desai by 29,060 votes.

With this the party's strength in the 182-member House has gone up to 127.

Patel polled 62,383 votes while Desai got 33,322 in the election held on January 9, election officials said.

The election was countermanded following the death law minister Hemant Chapatwala, the BJP candidate and the sitting legislator. The BJP then fielded Bhavnaben, wife of Chapatwala.
