January 10, 2003 00:43 IST
Over 40 per cent of the total 258,000 electorate on Thursday exercised their franchise for the by-election to Surat West assembly seat.
The polling, which began on a slow note in the morning, gathered pace at the fag end of the day and ended peacefully, official sources said.
The elections to this seat were countermanded following the death of Bharatiya Janta Party candidate Hemant Chapatwala on December 9.
Eleven candidates are in the fray, the real fight being between Bhavnaben Chapatwala, wife of the deceased candidate, and Congress nominee Naishadh Desai.
Polling was peaceful at all 269 booths in the constituency where heavy bandobast was maintained. No untoward incident was reported so far, Surat collector M K Das said.
Counting of votes will take place on January 11, election officials said.
