Polling for Surat West on Thursday

January 08, 2003 00:27 IST

Over 258,000 voters are expected to exercise their franchise in the election to the Surat West constituency on Thursday.

Election to this particular constituency was countermanded in December following the death of Gujarat's caretaker law minister and Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Hemant Chapatwala.

Among the 11 contestants this time are Bhavana Chapatwala, the late minister's wife, Naishadh Desai of the Congress, and Amrut Masuriya of the Samajwadi Party.

From the 269 polling booths, 73 have been declared sensitive while 48 others are hypersensitive, an official release said in Surat on Tuesday.

More than 1500 employees, including 18 zonal officers, will be engaged to conduct the election. Two observers --Shishir Sinha and Amitabh Shukla -- have been assigned by the Election Commission to supervise the polls.

The counting will take place on January 11.
