Azad elected J&K CLP leader

Election 2002

Onkar Singh in Srinagar

The Jammu and Kashmir unit chief of the Congress, Ghulam Nabi Azad, was on Monday elected leader of the Congress legislature party at a meeting in Srinagar.

The meeting was attended by all 20 Congress MLAs. Party observers R K Dhawan and Ahmed Patel were also present.

The meeting lasted all of ten minutes.

Azad's name was proposed by Mangat Ram Sharma and seconded by Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed.

Soon after, Azad called on Governor Girish Chandra Saxena. He, however, told reporters that he was not meeting the governor to stake claim to form the government. He said he would meet the governor again in a day or two.
