Supreme Court stays Jain TV's exit poll

The Supreme Court today stayed till further orders the telecast of opinion or exit polls on the first round of Lok Sabha elections scheduled at 2000 hrs tonight on Jain satellite television channel.

The direction was issued by a three-judge bench comprising Justices S B Majumdar, M B Shah and U C Bannerjee in the presence of Dr J K Jain, owner of Jain TV. In its brief order, the court said the issue of the telecast of opinion or exit polls by Jain TV would be deliberated upon tomorrow, when the court continues the hearing of an application by the Election Commission seeking direction to the Union of India and other to enforce its poll-related guidelines dated August 20, 1999 and January 20, 1998.

Earlier, Jain TV was issued a notice in the morning when the Election Commission's counsel Harish Salve drew the court's attention to a news item in today's newspapers announcing the telecast of the exit polls on Jain TV. Salve submitted that the telecast would be in violation of the Election Commission's guidelines prohibiting dissemination of opinion or exit poll results between September 3 and October 3, 1999.
