Saluting the Legends

In 1946, Lala Amarnath claimed 5 for 118 at Lord's. The legendary Lala then captained India on its first tour of Australia but the English trip was memorable for his bowling. With a short run-up, bowling off the wrong foot, he ended up as India's highest India's wicket-taker.

Former India skipper Polly Umrigar presents a memento to Rajinder Amarnath, the Lala's youngest son. His elder sons Surinder and Mohinder have, of course, played cricket for India.

Left-hander Surinder scored a century on debut against New Zealand in 1976 while Mohinder, who made his debut against the Aussies at 19 in 1969, has too many achievements to recount here. Without him, India would probably not have won the 1983 World Cup. Little wonder that he was named Man of the Match in both the semi-final against England and final against the West Indies.
