Adam's the apple

Born on November 14, 1971, Gilchrist wanted to be the world's fastest bowler as a child, influenced by the famed pace duo of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson, which ruled the roost at that time.

But his fascination for fast bowling lasted only until he saw a pair of shiny wicket-keeping gloves on the shelf of a sports shop in Victoria, Melbourne. That was the start of his true cricketing journey. Within two years, Adam and his young mates from Deniliquin Primary School created history by becoming the first country team to win the Taber Shield (a knock-out competition for primary schools in New South Wales). Adam was the wicketkeeper, opening batsman and captain of the team.
